What is SS7?
SS7 (Signalling System No. 7) is the global backbone protocol that telecommunications networks - such as those built by mobile network operators - use to communicate internally and with one another. Think of it as a secure, behind-the-scenes internet for mobile networks.
A standard SMPP connection simply passes data from a client - typically a messaging platform - to a server - another A2P gateway with no transparency of what actually happens to the message. But an SS7 connection allows a messaging platform to interact directly with core telecom infrastructure, like an actual mobile operator, and, by doing so, provides full transparency about the message.
